It is finally starting to feel cooler here in Southern California! As we welcome the cooler temps it is also never to early to boost your immune system to prevent the cold and flu season from hitting your household.
Here are some tips in keeping your immune system healthy!
- Drink plenty of fluids, especially warmer fluids. With the dryer air and the cooler weather, winter can make it challenging to stay hydrated! When you consume adequate fluids it supports all of your bodies’ functions including the immune system. Besides water, an easy way to consume warm fluids is by having some warm lemon water and adding grated or sliced ginger to it.
- With all the holiday treats lurking in every corner, it is best to avoid the simple sugar as much as possible. Not only does this include cakes, pies and other desserts, but also white flour products and refined grains that turn to sugar in your body quickly. Studies have shown that refined sugars can suppress the immune system.
- Add ginger, turmeric, onions, garlic and oregano in to your meals. These are easy to add to any vegetable dish as well as soups. Garlic and onions are also known for having antimicrobial properties.
- Lastly, eat multiple servings of fruits and vegetables. Think colorful. Fruits and vegetables are high in Vitamin C, Vitamin A and phytonutrients that support the immune system. Aim for 3-4 servings of fruit and 4+ servings of vegetables a day.
Remember: Let Food Be Your Medicine!
