Drink your coffee with your breakfast. So many people drink their coffee and rush out the door forgetting about the most important meal of the day. It is so important to line your stomach with food (healthy fats and proteins) while you drink coffee. If you don’t eat when you have your coffee you lower your energy levels for the day. When you drink coffee on an empty stomach your body releases insulin in response to the caffeine. This causes a major drop in blood sugar, which can leave you feeling tired and depleted. Who wants to start their day off tired and depleted?
Kick the creamer. Have you ever read the ingredients on a bottle of creamer? It is all artificial. Instead use canned coconut milk, homemade almond milk or a combination of both like we do. Even organic whole milk would work.
Avoid processed and artificial sugars. If you need to sweeten your coffee try a teaspoon of coconut sugar or even a touch of maple syrup. These are still considered sugars, but they won’t spike your blood sugar levels.
Choose organic beans/coffee. Coffee beans are one of the most heavily pesticide sprayed crop in the world. Pesticides can’t be washed off, therefore you are consuming these chemicals.
Even better, drink espresso! If you drink coffee with in the first 15 minutes that it is brewed it is more alkaline forming. The longer coffee sits around the more acidic it gets, which means more inflammation for the body. When out and about order an americano or an expresso so it is freshly brewed.
Lastly, add a teaspoon of cacao, cinnamon or if you want to get wild and crazy you can add collagen. All of these have antioxidant properties and cinnamon is known to help control blood sugar levels. Collagen is flavorless, but rich in amino acids. It can help reduce inflammation in the body and reduce joint pain.
